Cosmos on Heretic II and Hexen II Posted by Demolisher on Wednesday, July 26, 2000
In a thread on Raven's Voyager forums, Mike "Cosmos" Gummelt, Raven programmer and creator of the original Hexenworld Siege, mentions Hexen II and Heretic II:Hexen II's puzzles did tend to get kind of hard (especially Egypt). The mission pack was a lot of fun to work on and concentrated much more on action than puzzles. And it still has (in my view) one of the best snow models in a FPS ever.... the snow flurries around, each flake is different, it can fly through windows, stick to surfaces and melt! Woo! (can you tell who programmed the snow?)
Heretic II is the one Raven game I still load up and play just because it was so much fun. The control and combat is so good it makes me feel like an action film star- and ass-kicking acrobatic hero who slices enemies to pieces or makes them explode into flaming gibs! ------------------ Mike Gummelt Game Programmer/Writer Star Trek Voyager - Elite Force

Touch Of Heretic II In Elite Force Posted by wmull on Monday, July 17, 2000
Raven's Project Admin. Kenn Hoekstra responded to a thread on the VEF forums asking where are the curves, giving this insight into what we can look forward to in some of the later levels, which should give Heretic II fans at least some consolation:There are tons of curves in the game. Just look at the hallways and the round stuff on the ceiling of the bridge. Later in the game, there are "Stasis" levels that are composed almost entirely of curves. Rest assured, we put the curve tech to the test... Not all of the levels are high-tech themes. We have some organic levels and other "looks" as well.
If you want the fantasy look, there's a level or two for holomatch that use the Heretic II textures and architecture style.
Amiga Heretic II Update Posted by Demolisher on Monday, July 17, 2000
The Hyperion Software Page has an update for their version of Heretic II for the Amiga. This update fixes some annoying bugs in the original release of Heretic II. The following things changed:
In the original version saving the game did cause a crash at some places under certain circumstances (for example Andoria Plaza), this is now fixed. Some people had problems with the CD-ROM code. This is fixed. Some people could only start the game every second time. This is fixed. Some people experienced delays having to do with the CD-ROM code sometimes. This is fixed. In the ref_gl.dll a debug output was remaining, which caused slowdowns in some scenes. This was removed. Updated Heretic II Troubleshooting and Tweaking document. For more detailed information please refer to the documentation included in the download.
At this place we also want to announce, that a port of the Multiplayer-Addon "The Siege" of Heretic II is in progress. At this place we want to thank the author of The Siege (The ShadowLord) for doing an Amiga Version. You can find more information on the Siege Homepage.
Have fun with the update!
Outworlds Project News Posted by Demolisher on Monday, July 17, 2000
DraX brings us this really great news in his hosted site plan file onThe OuterWorlds Project for Heretic II:Some good news on the Outerworlds front! I'm sure many of you know that Grin has just released the beta version of her Heretic II bots. Oh, you didn't know? Well what are you waiting for? Go get them!!! Anyway, This may possibly overcome a major hurdle which Outerworlds had to, well... overcome. (which isn't the half of it with my limited coding knowledge, but hey, sue me) One of the additions that I felt was necessary in Outerworlds was bots.. not as enemies, but as allies. As you may know, I have held back on releasing several player models simply because I had built them for Outerworlds. These were of several Sidhe and the like, with a few dozen skins made for spawning NPCs. It was my intention that not only would these new characters be playable in DM, but also that they be able to "Join your party" With Grins' new bots this may be possible. So there I was, wondering How this would get incorporated into Outerworlds, and guess who's name shows up on my Contact List? GRIN!! "Hi, Grin, how're you doing, nice bots, can you please, please, please, please, please, please, please......(you get the picture) ...work with me on Outerworlds?" (Okay, that's not QUITE how it went, but I have to make it sound good) Anyway she accepted, I dusted off my files and got back to work on this endless project.

More Info On The GrinBots Posted by Demolisher on Saturday, July 15, 2000
The talented Grin gives us this great update on our sister site's forums:Firstly - this is just a beta test release, to check that the AI i've written is enough to keep people on their toes, and to check that my babies are gonna be able to stand up for themselves against some of the hardened DM'ers out there. They will definately be tweaked a lot. Crashes- I have yet to figure out what is causing this. I do not have this problem, so it must be something to do with peoples systems/setups. I'm working on it. Chickens - The bots at the moment do not know that they are chickens, and get really confused by the whole chicken deal. I'm gonna write some AI to deal with this after I've got other stuff worked out. Blade - Strange that I've left this out, as I'm a blader and hardly ever play DM. But, I've not been able to come up with a way of getting them to use it intelligently in DM. I'd be glad to hear your ideas on this, and code them in if they are workable. Swimming - Very poor. I know why they are so bad at it, and think I can fix it fairly easily. Ropes - bah. I hate them. Whirlwind - Good idea about planting them on top of shrines and important items. As I don't play DM, I didn't know a good use for it. The only problem that will cause is that I will have to make the bots see the dropped whirwinds and avoid them. Ring of repulsion - At the moment they use this if they have it and if they see a pbow arrow coming at them. I'm not sure if this is the right way to use it. Rolling - yep, if they are on fire, they will roll to try and put out the flames. Teleport - At the moment, they will use the teleport if they are under attack, and have less than 20% health. Did not want them being really annoying and teleporting all the time. I could make them use it if they are stuck - good idea. Reflection - They do not know when the enemy is reflecting. The AI is not advanced enough to deal with that yet, but I do plan to include it. Saving routes - Will be possible. Left it out of the beta for simplicity. Model/skins - Again, I have this working right now, but left this out of the beta to make things more simple. You will be able to spawn a bot using sv bot spawn name skin to spawn custom bots. secret doors and breakable brushes - They don't know about these things yet. Will try to include it.
